Hindustan Zinc Embraces Renewable Energy: A New Chapter in Sustainability

New Delhi: In a significant stride towards sustainability and clean energy integration, Vedanta group firm Hindustan Zinc has commenced receiving power supply from Serentica Renewables. This renewable energy initiative, announced on Global Energy Independence Day, marks a pivotal moment in the company’s ongoing commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

Hindustan Zinc, one of the world’s leading zinc and silver producers, has operational business units spread across Rajasthan. The integration of renewable energy from Serentica Renewables is set to power these units, thereby significantly increasing the proportion of clean energy in the company’s overall energy mix. As per the agreement, Serentica will supply 450 MW of power round-the-clock to Hindustan Zinc.

Currently, Hindustan Zinc boasts a captive solar power capacity of 40.70 MW. However, the majority of its energy requirements have traditionally been met through conventional fuel sources. The new renewable energy supply from Serentica is expected to reduce this dependency, marking a substantial step forward in the company’s sustainability journey. The integration of renewable energy is anticipated to reduce approximately 0.45 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

“This project will not only reduce our dependency on conventional fuels and minimize our total environmental footprint but also aid our transformation towards decarbonizing our operations, paving the way for a fully sustainable future,” said Hindustan Zinc CEO Arun Misra. His statement underscores the company’s dedication to integrating sustainable practices and reducing carbon emissions, aligning with global environmental goals.

The first phase of this renewable energy integration has been successfully commissioned ahead of schedule in Bikaner, Rajasthan. Akshay Hiranandani, CEO of Serentica Renewables, highlighted this achievement as a testament to Serentica’s commitment to accelerating India’s clean energy transformation. “The successful and ahead-of-schedule commissioning of Phase 1 (solar) in Bikaner exemplifies Serentica’s commitment to accelerating India’s clean energy transformation,” Hiranandani remarked.

Serentica Renewables is renowned for providing renewable energy through a combination of solar, wind, energy storage, and balancing solutions. This partnership with Hindustan Zinc is a part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable energy solutions and reduce the carbon footprint of industrial operations. The integration of such a substantial amount of renewable energy not only supports Hindustan Zinc’s sustainability goals but also sets a precedent for other companies in the mining and metals sector to follow suit.

The importance of this development extends beyond the immediate environmental benefits. By integrating renewable energy into its operations, Hindustan Zinc is also contributing to India’s broader energy goals. The country has been pushing for increased adoption of renewable energy to meet its climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. Projects like this one between Hindustan Zinc and Serentica are crucial in achieving these national targets.

Furthermore, the move towards renewable energy can have economic benefits for Hindustan Zinc. With the global push towards sustainability, companies that adopt green practices are likely to have a competitive edge. Investors and consumers are increasingly favoring companies that demonstrate a commitment to environmental responsibility. By integrating renewable energy, Hindustan Zinc not only enhances its sustainability credentials but also potentially improves its market standing.

In conclusion, the commencement of renewable energy supply from Serentica Renewables to Hindustan Zinc represents a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability journey. This initiative is poised to reduce carbon emissions, lessen dependency on conventional fuels, and set a benchmark for other companies in the industry. As Hindustan Zinc continues to lead by example, it reinforces the critical role that renewable energy can play in transforming industrial operations towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
